To unveil the current physiological races and virulence patterns of Puccinia graminis f.sp.avenae and to provide guidance for screening of germplasm for stem rust resistance and setting goals of resistance breeding, races of P.graminis f.sp.avenae in China were characterized. 12 single Pg gene differentials of oat used in North America were applied for race identification at seedling stage using Pg a samples collected in oat growing areas in China in 2013. The three letter Pg a code nomenclature system was followed to name the races. The results showed that 26 isolates isolated from 11 accessions were identified as 3 races, namely TKR, TJM and TKM. Their occurrence frequencies were 61.6%, 30.8% and 7.6 %, respectively. It was also indicated that virulence frequency on both Pg 6 and Pg 15was zero, but on Pg 1, Pg 2, Pg 3, Pg 4, Pg 8, Pg 9, Pg 12, Pg 16 and Marvellous, were up to 100% and on Pg 10, Pg 13, Pg a and Rodney 0, was up to 69.2%, 61.6%, 61.6% and 84.6% ,respectively. Three races were found out in the P.graminis f.sp.avenae population from China. Race TKR was the most predominant and the resistance of Pg 6 and Pg 15were highly effective to all of the above races of P.graminis f.sp.avenae. |
